OUGD406: Design Practice 1 - Communication is a Virus: 5-A-Day Critique (22/02/13)

As we would essentially be writing our own brief as part of the 'Communication is a Virus' brief we were asked we were asked to pitch our initial concept for the brief which defined the context and method of delivery of our final outcome.

What is the concept?

We will design and produce a app and website which will aim to reduce the users addiction with the social media website, Facebook. The app will achieve this by monitoring how often the user uses Facebook and intend to reduce it by five each day for the first week.

What is the context?

In reference to a person's daily diet each day the term '5 - A - DAY' means to increase your intake of fruit and veg each day to create a healthier lifestyle.
This idea can to relate our concept which aims to reduce the amount of time a student uses Facebook - an average of 23 times a day - as constantly staring at a computer screen could be thought of as an unhealthy lifestyle.

What is the method of delivery?

We will use a app to monitor the amount of time the user uses Facebook and then encourage them to reduce this amount. The app will also link in with a website and Facebook which will post embarrassing photos as punishment, encouraging status' as a reward and will advertise the app.

The feedback from the critique that although our concept for the brief was strong, due to the fact it could not actually be done our idea for the method of delivery was scrutinised by our tutors. Our initial thoughts for the method of delivery was to create an app which would interact with the audience and make the process of decreasing your Facebook use more 'fun', the crit however made us realise that being unable to actually make the app and only a mock up of what it would look like meant there would be no source to find out whether our concept was working and had gone 'viral'
