OUGD403: Design Skills - Alphabet Soup : Visual Thinking
I began the research process for the 'Alphabet Soup' by researching into definitions, synonyms and uses of the word 'Melt'. I was then able to select phrases from these, which would form the basis of the individual ten letterfroms I was asked to design.
The main phrases that I chose were; 'to disappear or vanish gradually', 'To cause (units) to blend' and the synonym 'fade' which I chose as, I felt I would be able to communicate them visually. Therefore, I feel my final designs display experimentation into a range of ideas.
From the processes I experimented with in this brief, I particularly enjoyed working with the 'paper-cutting' technique as although it was quite difficult and fiddly, I feel the final design works well and is more unique. I also think that as a letterform the 'H' works quite well as it clearly represents 'melting' and again is more unique. I would definatly consider using these techniques in future briefs.
-My Final Designs
For the group critique, we were asked to show and briefly explain the reasoning behing our final solutions to the other members of the group, who then chose the strongest five letterforms which where placed on the wall.
We were then able to look at other members of our year groups designs as we walked around the studio, I particularly enjoyed this part of the group crit as I was able to see others work and as they had also selcted 'Melt' from the randomisers, what their interpretation of the word and brief was.
We then moved to another table, and our work was scrutinised by other group who chose the top five, and eventually overall best design according to legibility and idea.
Although the process of the group critique can be quite rutherless, I enjoyed this session as I was able to hear about other members opinions and styles as well as see it within there work.
