OUGD402 : Personal and Professional Practice - 'What is Graphic Design?' Part One
As part of the PPP session, we were asked within our blog groups to explain to the other members of our group the reasoning behind the 10 examples of design that illustrate our creative interests which was the task set last week. As we listened to each member of the group we also wrote short-hand notes that briefly gave there explanations.
Our year group then discussed the most common reasonings we had heard and the most important criteria for a piece of design. These became a list of 14 examples of which idividually we were to choose five and collect five examples of a piece of design which displayed tis criteria for next weeks session.
The Five Examples I chose where;
1. Creative use of type
I feel Lewis Caroll has used type creatively within this page design for his book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, as he has used the body copy to convey the image in which it describes; I believe this is more interesting to look at than a normal page of type.
In this design, I like how the designer has creatively used the letterform 'g' as part of the bag itself, I believe this gives more interaction with the user of the bag than if the design was simply placed on the side.
I like how the designer subtly modified the type within the design to convey an image. Particularly how they have used a cursive typeface to gives the impression of waves and the anchor illustration that also works as an '&' symbol.
Again, I belive this design has used type creatively by using the letterform 'P' as an image that conveys the meaning of the word itself.
I feel the use of type is effective in this design as I like the contrast between the soft, neutral colour palette the designer has used and the almost 'harsh' graphic typeface they have chosen.
2. Shapes
I believe the designer of this piece has used shapes well within this design, I particuarly like how the triangles have been used to draw the viewers attention toward the 'house' illustration.
I chose this design for the 'shapes' catagory as I like how the shape within the design guides the eye around the page and particularly how the designer had broken up the graphic shape with an illustration, which I feel adds 'humour'.
I particularly find the repitition of the shapes within this design to be effective as I believe it gives the piece texture, which gives it more of an 'interactive' feel.
Although the shapes the designer has used on this design are quite simplistic, I believe as a pattern, they are quite graphic. I like how the designer has also used the same pattern thoughout the design as I believe it gives continuity to the piece.
I particuarly like the minimalistic style of this poster for the movie Lost in Translation. The designer has used negative space and basic shapes to convey an image which I feel is more effect although it has little detail.
3. Simplicity
I particularly like design that uses an simplistic style as I belive it makes more of an impact. I feel this design is effective as the designer has used two basic shapes to convey an image the is instantly recognisable.
As with the 'My Week With Marilyn' poster, the designer has used basic shapes to convey an image, I believe this simplistic style is more effective, particularly for posters as it concentrates on the important pieces of information and communicates a message quickly.

I feel, in this design, the designer has effectively used a simplistic style by using an image which subtly conveys the plot of the film, without giving too much away. I also like how the designer has encorparated the type into the illustration as this adds to the simplistic effect.
I chose this design for the simplicity catagory as I feel that not only the design, but the concept behind the design is also simplistic and clever.
Again, this design has conveyed a simplistic style by using basic shapes to convey the idea/message of the piece of design.
4. Media
Within this piece the designer has used both digital and hand-rendered techniques, I particularly like to used mixed media within my own work as I feel the mixture of both digital and hand-rendered creates a more unusual style.
This piece by Owen Gildersleeve, uses collage which is again, is a hand-rendered technique. I feel gildersleeve has used the technique effectively within the design particularly by using black and white collage to draw attention to the cut-out which is full colour.
I feel the use of collage for this book cover is particualrly effective, as it creates a more 'inter-active' feel which would draw attention and appeal to the audience.
Again, this piece uses a hand-rendered technique, as this is a style I particularly like to use in my own work. In this design, I especially like the idea of recycling a music sheet to encorparate into an illustration as it is quite unusual.
Like the music sheet illustration, this design has recycled newspaper and used it as the base of the illustration. I like how the design has 'highlighted' the words 'complicated' and 'jug' from the newspaper as again this shows mixed media.
5. Personal Interest

I like this advertisement for Fanta uses humour as he concept for its design, as it is something I like to encorparate into my own work and I feel it is more appealing to the audience.
Despite this design design for train tickets is quite simplistic, I feel the concept behind the design is clever and something that would stand out to me personally.
As with the packaging for the train tickets, this matches packaging has used wit in a simplistic way to produce a clever and memorable design.
As I like to use both type and image within my own design work, I particularly like this design which also uses both type and image. I especially like the interesting contrast of the intricate, black and white illustrations and type with the larger, cyan type.
Within my own design work I am particularly inspired by vintage and retro styles, In particular I like the style used on American postcards as they often encorparate these styles.
