As part of the reflection process, we were put into groups of five to discuss our progress on the study tasks we has already been set as part of the module and set ourselves aims for each task for the 12th February deadline.
Study Task 2: What is Graphic Design? (Part One) - Choose five criteria and minimum of five examples of Graphic Design for each.
PLAN: Review post and annotations and add more images (7 - 10 minimum?)
Study Task 3: What is Graphic Design? (Part Two) - Graphic Design in different contexts, functions, concepts etc.
PLAN: Make sure all images are referenced and add annotations
Study Task 4: What is Graphic Design For? - Five examples of websites and ten examples of Graphic Design for each category.
PLAN: Add annotations for each of the ten images and add sources
Study Task 5: Where Am I Now?
A) 10 things that you have learned about yourself as a learner.
- Those should reflect your personal development and individual journey since that start of the program - Be specific
1. I believe during a brief, I often spend too much time developing my initial ideas therefore giving myself less time to develop and improve the final outcome.
This was a particular problem during the Design Skills module as we were given a short time scale compared to what I was used to, to produce initial ideas and create the final outcome. By spending more time on the idea generation part of the design process, the final outcome development suffered.
2. Often during a brief, I feel rushed to meet deadlines therefore I believe I still need to learn how to manage my time better so I give myself more time to produce the final outcome for the brief.
-Example from my own work
During a brief, I often underestimate to amount of time it will take to produce the final outcome for a brief. A particular example of this is the outcomes for the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' brief which I was unable to produce using Lino prints as I had originally planned as did not give myself enough time.
3. Despite preferring to work individually I have learned that I am able to work and communicate as part of a group.
-Examples from my own work
Throughout the 'How To...' brief of the Design Process module I enjoyed working as part of a group to solve our set problem. By working in a group, we were able to communicate the most appropriate solution to the problem and create initial ideas quicker.
4. To motivate myself out of my comfort zone, I believe I need to try techniques and processes in my design work which I have never used before.
Within my design work, I tend to use the same techniques and process that I know rather than experimenting with techniques I do not know. Therefore by taking advantage of the resources available during briefs I will become familiar with these new techniques.
5. During the design process, I find feedback in the form of progress critiques useful.
Throughout my time on the course, I have found the critique useful particularly during the 'Research, Collect. Communicate' brief from the Design Process module which required us to attend a series of progress crits, I found these crits particularly useful as I will able to discuss my ideas and receive feedback on how I can improve my designs.
6. I believe I could use the time-tabled studio development more effectively.
7. I feel I am more productive when given time to work independently than in a controlled studio sessions.
-Examples from my own work
Compared to the briefs we were given for the Design Skills module, during the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' we were given more independence to develop our final solutions. I believe I benefited from this independence as I was able to produce more for the brief than I had previously.
8. At the start of the programme, I felt I was organised however I still feel I could improve these skills when working on several modules at one time.
During my time on the programme, I have been required to work on several modules at one time which is something I was not used to on my previous course. This has enabled me to develop my organisational skills which I believe will be beneficial in the future.
9. When collecting research for briefs, I tend to use the internet as a main resource for information and images instead of taking advance of the range of resources available.
As a habit from previous courses I had been on I tended to use the internet as a main resource for collecting research, during the programme however, particularly on the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' I found that collecting research from various different sources enabled me to be more informed on the subject.

10. Despite being comfortable when discussing and contributing ideas to a small group, I believe in relation to our year group I not contribute as much as I could, particularly in seminars and workshops.
Although the programme has often required me to communicate my ideas and final outcomes to a group of people, I still believe I could gain more confidence in this area and therefore contribute more to the group.
B) 10 things that you have learned about yourself as a designer.
- These should reflect your growing awareness of your own interests within design
- Areas you want to find out more about - Specific audiences, content and disciplines
1. Within my design work I like to employ a humorous tone of voice.
- Examples from my own work
I like to use humour within my design, when appropriate as I personally would respond to a piece of design if humour or wit has been used. As an audience humour or wit is generally more engaging than a more serious tone of voice.
2. As I have more confidence when using hand-rendered media rather than digital, I therefore feel that my designs which use hand-rendered media are better.
- Example from my own work
I prefer to work with hand-rendered techniques within my work as I believe this is were my strengths lie, compared to when I use digital techniques to produce a piece of design I am more confident and therefore more experimental with hand-rendered techniques.
3. When communicating a message I find it easier to use type or type and image rather than solely using an image in my design work.
- Examples from my own work
I found this particularly through the 'Message and Delivery' brief in which we were required to produce three posters to communicate a message; one solely type, one solely image and one which incorporated type and image. I found it easier to communicate the message through type rather than images as I was able to incorporate the humorous tone of voice I like to use more effectively e.g. In word play.
4. I particularly enjoy the the idea generation part of the design process.
- Example from my own work
I particularly enjoy the idea generation part of the design process as it gives me the opportunity to be quite experimental with ideas and the techniques I use to create these ideas.
5. As enjoy using hand-rendered media in my work, I would like to use traditional printing processes more in my design work.
- Examples from my own work
During my time on the programme, I would like to experiment more with the traditional print resources available to me as this is a particular style I am interested in and would like to incorporate with my designs.
6. I am particularly interested in the promotion aspect of Graphic Design.
- Examples from my own work
From all of the briefs I have worked on as part of the programme, I have particularly enjoyed the briefs such as 'Message and Delivery' and 'Research, Collect, Communicate' which involved promoting a product. I particularly enjoyed these briefs as they have given me a specific purpose and therefore made it easier for me to produce ideas as a solution.
7. I would like to find out more about the publishing aspect of Graphic Design
8. I am not interested in the Illustration aspect of Graphic Design.
-Example from my own work
As part of the outcome for the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' brief I decided produce stickers however, I did not really enjoy designing the stickers as they only required a single image and did not require 'much' designing. I preferred designing the posters for the same brief as it gave me more content to work with and more possible solutions.
9. I would like to learn more about the principles of typography and put these principles into practice within my design work.
-Examples from my own work
As part of the Design Principles module, the sessions on type were particularly interesting as we learned about the many 'rules' which are important for the use of typography. I believe these sessions gave me a greater understanding of how to use typography within Graphic Design.
10. When producing final outcomes for a brief, I believe I could pay more attention to the finish, to give it a more professional feel.
- Examples from my own work
I like to use humour within my design, when appropriate as I personally would respond to a piece of design if humour or wit has been used. As an audience humour or wit is generally more engaging than a more serious tone of voice.

I found this particularly during the 'Research, Collect, Communicate' brief. Although I am happy with my final designs and the 'texture' created by the hand-rendered technique I use I still believe the quality of the of the final design could be improved to create something which is more professional and could be actually be used by a client.
